A Reader Asks: How Much Does Your Harley Weigh?

I actually got the opportunity to weigh my Road king the other day - it was 842 pounds. This included about 3/4 tank of gas, and a few things in my saddlebags, but I think the bulk of the extra weight over and above the factory spec came from many of the aftermarket accessories I’ve added to the bike. I can’t believe people actually want to ride Japanese sport bikes when they weigh less than half of what my bike weighs - what a joke!. So do you know what your bike weighs?

yeah, my bike weighs about half what yours does, any time you want to got to the track let me know and I’ll show you why jap sport is better than HD.

Look at a more important figure, out of that 850lbs, you get what 100 h.p. … maybe, and in my 400lbs, I’ve got oh 175!

hmmmm…. almost twice the power and less than half the weight, I can’t see why anyone would want that!

oh, and if we end up in the grill of a semi, your 850 isn’t gonna do any better than my 400.

I don’t know why you guys even try any more!

(I can only get about 90 in first … btw)

A heavy bike can feel much lighter than its bulk when moving (Honda Goldwing is a well-known example) and a light bike can feel heavier depending on how it's set up. Feel is a personal subjective choice. A big stable road barge for Interstate might be your choice. I hate the Interstate, even if I am on a road barge.

Heavy, light, I don't care, both have advantages in terms of comfort, and I love them both, but a light weight sport bike is decades beyond any heavy bike in terms of handling and speed. For you, heavy must feel good. If you ever got to ride a modern sportbike you would understand. I assure you, it is better that you, or I, ever will be. Two different worlds. Big 1000 sport models are actually capable of 100 mph in first gear with five more gears after that!

What is your perceived advantage in weighing more? Plan on taking out a car?

Mine weighs 1040 pounds. I carry a lot of safety equipment on mine though in case I see another stranded Halry rider. The safety flares weigh about 70 pounds alone. I usually carry several extra pairs of multicolored leather chaps in case of an emergency as well. Renaldo usually rides on the back of my bike so that is an extra 110 pounds too.

Book said 735 lb. I don't remember if that was wet or dry. Probably dry. I never thought to hit the scales with it. Whatever it really is does not matter much to me. I've found it to be heavy enough to be very stable on the road. The other thing I noticed is I can just about set her upright again with one hand. Surprised me, as I aint big at only 135 myself.
